How to create a WhatsApp link with a message
A WhatsApp link (wa.me) opens a chat straight with your number and, if you want, with the first message already typed. It is the ideal destination for an Instagram bio, a website button, an email or an ad: people do not have to save a contact or type anything.
The mistakes that break this link are small: a number with a zero or brackets, a missing country code, and a message with accents or symbols that was never encoded. This tool checks the number, encodes the text and, when you quote a link in the message, adds the UTM so the visit can be measured.
- Enter the country code and the number. Type the country code (1 for the US, 44 for the UK) and the phone number. Brackets, spaces and hyphens are fine: the tool cleans them. If you paste the full number starting with +, the country code field is ignored.
- Write the first message. This is the text that appears ready in the chat box. Leave it empty to just open the chat. Line breaks are kept.
- Quote a link if it makes sense. Enter the destination page and, to measure the click, tick the UTM option and fill in source, medium and campaign. The link goes on its own line of the message.
- Copy and test. Copy the link, or use the test button to open the chat. Check that the number and the text show up as expected before you publish.
Everything is calculated here, in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to any server and we use no third-party cookies.
How the link is built
The format is the one of WhatsApp's official Click to Chat feature: the wa.me address, the number in international format (digits only, with no +, leading zeros, brackets or hyphens) and, optionally, the text parameter with the encoded message.
Encoding turns a space into %20, a line break into %0A, and ampersands (&), hashes (#), percent signs and accents into safe sequences. Without it, an & in the middle of the message would cut the text. The number always comes before the message and nothing is shortened: the link stays readable and trustworthy.
The UTM does not track the conversation inside WhatsApp. It measures the visit to the page quoted in the message, when the person clicks that link, and shows up in your analytics.

Examples
Instagram bio
Number +1 415 555 0123 and the message "Hi! I found you on Instagram and want to know more." produce https://wa.me/14155550123?text=Hi!%20I%20found%20you%20on%20Instagram%20and%20want%20to%20know%20more.
Message quoting an offer with UTM
With the page shop.com/offer and a UTM with source instagram, medium bio and campaign launch, the message carries https://shop.com/offer?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=bio&utm_campaign=launch on its second line.
Number pasted with formatting
"+1 (415) 555-0123" becomes 14155550123. A national number such as "0415 555 0123" with country code 1 has the leading zero removed, with a warning so you can check it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a WhatsApp link with a ready message?
Use the format https://wa.me/NUMBER?text=MESSAGE, with the number in international format and the message encoded. This tool does both: you type the number and the text normally and copy the finished link.
What is the correct number format for wa.me?
Country code, area code and phone number, digits only. A US number looks like 14155550123. Do not use +, leading zeros, brackets or hyphens, which WhatsApp's documentation asks you to omit.
How do I add UTM parameters to a WhatsApp link?
The UTM goes on the destination link you quote inside the message, not on wa.me. That way the click on that link is attributed to the campaign. The chat itself is not tracked by Google Analytics.
Do I need to shorten the WhatsApp link?
No. wa.me is already short, and a third-party shortener hides the destination, can be blocked and breaks if the service goes down. This tool never shortens links.
Why does the message arrive cut off or with strange symbols?
Because characters such as &, # and % were not encoded. When that happens, WhatsApp reads what follows as another parameter. The tool encodes the whole text and keeps accents and emoji.
Is there a message length limit?
The tool limits the first message to 1,000 characters and warns when the link passes 2,000, because some apps and social networks cut very long addresses. Short first messages convert better.
Are my number and message sent anywhere?
No. Everything is built in your browser, with no server requests and nothing saved. The link only opens WhatsApp when you click the test button or use it somewhere else.
