How to check the text of a Google and Meta ad
In Google Ads a responsive search ad (RSA) is not a fixed text: you supply up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions and Google assembles the combinations. Each field has a hard character limit, and one character over blocks saving. On Meta the limits are recommendations, but text that goes over is cut in the Feed and can hide the call to action.
Write here, watch each field's counter, see the generic preview and what to fix before pasting into the platform. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
- Pick the platform. The Google tab checks the responsive search ad; the Meta tab checks primary text, headline and description for the Feed.
- Fill in headlines and descriptions. On Google, write at least 3 headlines and 2 descriptions, and up to 15 and 4. The more different variations, the more combinations Google can test.
- Watch each field's counter. The counter shows characters used and the limit. When you go over, the field is flagged and the excess is spelled out in text.
- Read the warnings. The tool warns about unmet minimums, repeated headlines, invalid URL paths and policy points to watch.
- Check the preview and export. The preview shows one possible combination (Google) or the Feed cut (Meta). Export everything to CSV to review with your team.
Everything is calculated here, in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to any server and we use no third-party cookies.
Limits and how counting works
Google counts every character as 1, including letters, digits, inner spaces and punctuation. Characters from double-width languages (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) count as 2. So 30 letters fit in a headline, but 16 ideograms do not. Leading and trailing spaces are ignored.
On Meta the limits are Feed recommendations, not blocks: the text goes through but is cut when displayed. The exact cut point varies with placement and screen width, so the preview is an approximation based on character count.
- Google: headlines
up to 15, each up to 30 characters (minimum of 3) - Google: descriptions
up to 4, each up to 90 characters (minimum of 2) - Google: display paths
2 fields, up to 15 characters each - Google: double-width languages
Chinese, Japanese and Korean count 2 per character - Meta: primary text
about 125 characters visible before “See more” - Meta: headline and description
27 characters recommended in the Feed
Examples
A headline over the limit
“Lightweight running shoes with free shipping today” has 50 characters. A Google headline is capped at 30, so the counter shows 20 over. Shorten it to “Lightweight running shoes” (25) or “Running shoes, free shipping” (28).
Primary text cut on Meta
A 165-character primary text is cut near 125: the final part, where the call to action usually sits, ends up behind “See more”. Move the main message and the offer to the start of the text.
Display paths
With the domain example.com and the paths “running” and “shoes”, the displayed URL is example.com/running/shoes. Paths do not change the landing page; they only give the user context.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Google Ads character limit?
In a responsive search ad each headline takes up to 30 characters and each description up to 90, with up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. The two path fields take up to 15 characters each. These are the limits published in Google Ads Help.
Does Google count spaces and punctuation?
Yes. Every character counts 1, including inner spaces and punctuation. Leading and trailing spaces are ignored. Double-width characters, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean, count 2.
How many headlines and descriptions are required in an RSA?
You must provide at least 3 headlines and 2 descriptions to create the ad. You can provide up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and Google tests combinations to show the best one for each search.
What is the Meta primary text character limit?
Meta recommends about 125 visible characters of primary text; beyond that the Feed hides the rest behind “See more”. For headline and description the recommendation is 27 characters. They are guidelines, not blocks, and vary by placement.
Is the preview identical to what the platform shows?
No. The preview is generic and unbranded, and Google picks headline and description combinations automatically. Use it to check length and the order of ideas, and check the platform's official preview before publishing.
Can I use an exclamation mark in a Google headline?
It is risky. Google's editorial policy often rejects exclamation marks in headlines, so the tool warns you. Always confirm the current punctuation and symbols rules in Google's ads policy.
