How to combine keyword lists
Building a paid search account starts with a big keyword list, and most of it is combinations: action, product, feature, city. Doing that by hand in a spreadsheet invites mistakes and takes hours. The combiner crosses up to three lists, applies the match types and hands you a list ready to paste into Google Ads or the Editor.
All processing is local: your lists never leave the browser.
- Fill in lists A, B and C. Write one term per line. For example: A with actions (buy, price), B with products and C with features. List C is optional.
- Choose the match types. Broad, phrase and exact can be generated together. Each combination comes out in each ticked type.
- Set the output limit. The total number of combinations is the product of the list sizes times the number of types. The limit keeps huge lists from freezing the browser.
- Check the warnings. The tool tells you how many combinations exceed 80 characters or 10 words, which Google rejects.
- Copy or export. Copy the list to paste into the platform, or export CSV with the match type in its own column.
Everything is calculated here, in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to any server and we use no third-party cookies.
How the combination is computed
The number of combinations is the Cartesian product of the filled lists, after normalizing and removing duplicates. List A is the outer loop: every combination of A's first term comes out before A's second. Empty lists are ignored, so A × B works without C.
Match type syntax is the official Google Ads one: broad is the plain term, phrase is the term in quotes and exact is the term in square brackets. Modified broad match, with the + sign, was retired and is not generated. Symbols Google rejects (such as ! @ % ( ) = ; ?) are removed from terms.
- Total combinations
|A| × |B| × |C| - Total lines
|A| × |B| × |C| × number of ticked types - Broad
buy blue sneakers - Phrase
“buy blue sneakers” - Exact
[buy blue sneakers] - Google limits per keyword
up to 80 characters and 10 words
Examples
3 × 2 × 2 in three types
A with buy, price and quote; B with sneakers and shoes; C with men and women. That is 12 combinations, such as “buy sneakers men”, and 36 lines when generating broad, phrase and exact.
A list that explodes
Three lists of 100 terms make 1,000,000 combinations and 3,000,000 lines in all three types. The tool shows only up to the chosen limit and tells you the total. Shrink the lists or group by theme.
A term with a symbol
The term “sneakers (blue)!” becomes “sneakers blue” before combining, because parentheses and exclamation marks are not accepted in Google Ads keywords.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between broad, phrase and exact match?
With broad match, your ad can show for searches related to the term, even without the same words. With phrase match (in quotes), the search must include the meaning of the term in the same order. With exact match (in brackets), only searches with the same meaning as the term. The more exact, the smaller the reach and the greater the control.
How do I write phrase and exact match keywords in Google Ads?
Phrase is the term in quotes, like “blue sneakers”. Exact is the term in square brackets, like [blue sneakers]. Broad is the term with no symbols. This tool applies the syntax for you.
What about modified broad match (+term)?
Google retired it and it now behaves as phrase match. That is why the combiner does not output the + sign.
How many keywords can I generate?
The tool accepts up to 10,000 lines per list and up to 100,000 output lines. In practice, lean lists per theme work better than a giant Cartesian product, because ad groups with too many words lose relevance.
What is the maximum keyword length?
Google Ads accepts keywords of up to 80 characters and 10 words. The tool counts combinations above that and warns you.
Is my data sent to any server?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. No list is sent or stored.
